Limb Sparing & Oncology: Advanced Alternatives to Amputation
A diagnosis of bone cancer (Osteosarcoma) traditionally meant amputation as the only surgical option. At VSOS, we believe in providing choices that prioritise both oncology and quality of life. For suitable candidates, we offer advanced Limb Sparing techniques that allow us to save the leg while aggressively treating the cancer.
At the heart of our oncology department is the VSOS motto: "Beyond Possible." We refuse to accept that amputation is the only path when modern science offers a way to preserve a pet’s integrity and mobility.
What is Limb Sparing?
Limb sparing is a specialised surgical procedure designed to remove the primary bone tumour while preserving the function of the limb. This is an intricate process that combines surgical oncology with high-level orthopaedic reconstruction.
While not every patient is a candidate for limb sparing, depending on the tumour’s location and size, for many dogs, this offers a life-changing alternative to life on three legs.
3D-Printed Endoprosthesis Replacement
The most advanced form of limb sparing at VSOS involves the use of custom-designed Endoprostheses. This technology allows us to achieve outcomes once thought unreachable in veterinary medicine.
The Procedure: Our specialists remove the affected section of bone with wide, clean margins to ensure the cancer is addressed.
The Custom Implant: We replace the removed bone with a custom 3D-printed metal implant (often made of medical-grade titanium). These implants are designed using CT data to fit your pet's anatomy exactly.
Osteointegration: These 3D implants often feature porous "lattice" structures at the ends. This allows the patient’s natural bone to grow into the metal, creating a permanent, biological bond between the leg and the prosthesis.

Why Choose Limb Sparing?
While dogs generally adapt well to amputation, there are specific scenarios where limb sparing is the preferred clinical choice:
Pre-existing Orthopaedic Issues: If a dog has severe arthritis or cruciate disease in their remaining legs, they may struggle to carry their weight on three limbs.
Large & Giant Breeds: Very heavy dogs (such as Great Danes or Mastiffs) often benefit significantly from keeping all four limbs for stability and mobility.
Owner Preference: We understand that for many owners, preserving the physical integrity of their pet is a deeply important goal.

A Multidisciplinary Approach
Limb sparing is never performed in isolation. To achieve the best outcome, it is part of a comprehensive oncology plan:
Staging & Imaging
We use high-resolution CT to ensure the cancer has not spread and to map the tumour for the custom implant design.
Surgical Precision
Our specialist surgeons use 3D-printed cutting guides to ensure the tumour is removed with the exact margins required.
Chemotherapy
Surgery treats the "local" disease, but chemotherapy is typically recommended to address the microscopic spread of Osteosarcoma, extending your pet's quality of life.
Dedicated Rehab
Saving the limb is only the first step. Our Specialist Rehabilitation team at Miranda works with your pet to ensure they regain full use of the reconstructed leg, focusing on wound care and gradual weight-bearing.
Transparent Planning & Support
Limb sparing is a complex undertaking involving custom engineering and specialist care. VSOS provides a clear, comprehensive roadmap for the entire process, including:
Initial oncology consultation and staging.
3D design and fabrication of the custom endoprosthesis.
Specialist in surgical oncology and reconstruction.
Post-operative hospital care and your first Rehabilitation Session.
