Growth Deformities: Precision Correction with 3D Technology
Growth plate injuries in young, developing pets can lead to significant limb deformities. When one part of a bone stops growing while the rest continues, the limb can bow, twist, or shorten (often referred to as Angular Limb Deformities).
At VSOS, we don't rely on "eyeballing" these complex corrections. We utilise advanced 3D Surgical Planning and Patient-Specific Guides to ensure that a crooked limb is straightened with mathematical precision.
3D Surgical Planning: The Virtual Rehearsal
Correcting a deformity requires more than just a single cut; it often requires rotating and tilting the bone in multiple planes simultaneously. Our process transforms complex surgery into a predictable science:

CT-to-3D Modelling: We perform a high-resolution CT scan of the affected limb (and often the healthy opposite limb for comparison). This data is used to create a "Digital Twin" of your pet's bone structure.

Virtual Planning: Using specialised CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, our surgeons perform the surgery virtually. We can test different "cuts" (osteotomies) and movements on the screen to see exactly how they will realign the limb before we even enter the operating theatre.

Identifying Safe Corridors: In many cases, we must place screws into very narrow areas of bone near joints or growth plates. Virtual planning allows us to identify these "safe corridors" to avoid damaging vital structures.
Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Guides
Once the virtual plan is perfected, we 3D-print a custom surgical guide system designed specifically for your pet's unique bone shape. These guides act as a "GPS" for the surgeon's tools.
Translation of the Plan: The guides fit onto the bone in only one exact position. They feature pre-designed slots and holes that dictate the exact angle of the bone cut and the precise trajectory of every drill hole.
Eliminating Human Error: By using these guides, the angular corrections we planned on the computer are translated perfectly to the patient in the theatre. This ensures the limb is straightened exactly as intended, down to the millimetre.

Clinical Benefits for Your Pet
Utilising 3D-printed technology offers several significant advantages over traditional "freehand" orthopaedics:
Consistent & Accurate Outcomes
We achieve a level of symmetry and alignment that is virtually impossible to replicate with traditional X-rays and manual measurements.
Reduced Surgical Time
Because the "thinking" and "measuring" are done before the surgery begins, the time your pet spends under anaesthesia is significantly reduced.
Complex Case Management
This technology allows us to successfully treat complex deformities, vertebral stabilisations, and intricate fracture alignments that were previously considered too high-risk.
Integrated Rehabilitation
Straightening the bone is only the first step; the muscles, tendons, and nerves must adapt to the new limb length and orientation. Your VSOS deformity correction package includes an initial session with our Rehabilitation team. We use targeted physical therapy to help your pet "re-learn" how to use their straightened limb, ensuring a smooth transition to full mobility.
