Deborah Short

Vet Nurse

Deborah

From hair to fur

When Deborah was younger, she had two passions in life… animals and hairdressing. While she was keen to pursue her love of animals as a career, she was offered a hairdressing apprenticeship so chose to follow that path.

After more than 14 years as a hairdresser, the salon she was working at was sold, so she decided to retrain and follow her dream of vet nursing. She completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and has been working in the field since 2007.

When she heard about the VSOS emergency hospital she was determined to be a part of it.

“There is such a large population of pet owners in the southern Sydney area and prior to VSOS, you would have to travel long distances to get emergency help for your pet.

I’m so thrilled to be part of what we are offering here. We have the equipment, the option for overnight care and the team to offer a truly exceptional service.”

Hands on experience

For Deborah, there are so many things to love about her job at VSOS. She is working with an amazing team who are generous with sharing their knowledge and experience… and she has the opportunity to continue to learn and grow her skillset as a vet nurse.

Deborah knows that working at VSOS is where she is meant to be. She loves making a difference to our patients and being part of a team so dedicated to providing world-class animal care.

“I’m learning so much from everyone in the team. I want to move forward and keep learning so I can reach my potential as a vet nurse. I’m planning to complete my Diploma of Veterinary Nursing so I can further my knowledge to contribute to the team.”

Lifelong passion for animals

Deborah grew up in a semi-rural town and always had dogs, cats and horses around the property. As an Indigenous woman, she was always taught to protect the native species. She learnt a lot about animals from her father who would often bring injured wildlife home from his job in the national park.

“Animals are my life. My family all love animals so it’s in my blood. I couldn’t imagine life without animals.”

These days Deborah lives on a property with her six cats and a friend’s horse, which she cares for. She is a homebody and self-confessed nerd, always looking to learn and stretch her knowledge.
