At VSOS, we’re proud to offer minimally invasive surgery (MIS) options that reduce pain, shorten hospital stays, and support faster recovery for pets. Our techniques range from laparoscopy (“keyhole surgery”) to interventional radiology, using imaging guidance to treat conditions without traditional open surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Smaller incisions, faster recovery - advanced surgical options for pets.
What’s included in our MIS service?
Our advanced procedures include:
- Laparoscopic desexing and organ biopsies
- Laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (for at-risk breeds)
- Thoracoscopy (chest procedures)
- Interventional radiology (e.g. tracheal stents, embolisation)
- Subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) for blocked ureters
- Cystoscopy and laser stone removal
These procedures are often performed through tiny incisions with the help of fibre-optic cameras, avoiding large cuts and reducing post-operative discomfort.

Common reasons for referral
- Breeds at risk of GDV (gastric torsion)
- Biopsy needs (liver, pancreas, lymph nodes)
- Recurrent urinary tract issues or bladder stones
- Tracheal collapse
- Urinary obstruction or ectopic ureters
- Cancerous blood supply requiring embolisation
Many of these techniques are not available at general practices and require specialist training and facilities.

Innovation, without compromise
VSOS is among the few hospitals in Australia offering true interventional radiology for pets. We combine high-resolution imaging, skilled surgical teams, and gentle anaesthetic protocols to ensure each pet receives world-class care, tailored to their condition.
